St Anger. Loved by few, loathed by many. What is it that is so wrong with this CD, which contains music better than nearly all post-1998 metal? I'll tell you why. Because it's by a sober non Jason-Newsted-containing Metallica. Because since it came after the wave of "nu-metal" and Metallica couldn't help but be influenced by the low-tunings, lack of guitar solos, and deep animal-like vocals, it isn't the same sound as the previous albums such as And Justice for All and Load. Mind you, I am not completely disinterested in "nu-metal", I do have a soft spot in my heart for System of a Down and Disturbed, but I need my true metal, man!
Frankly, before I bought the CD I thought St Anger would be crap. I heard the songs "St. Anger" and "Frantic" on the radio, which weren't bad songs, but they weren't much to be excited about, either. Which is why, when I put the shiny black CD into my stereo, I was more than a little skeptical. I heard the first two songs, Frantic and St. Anger, and tried to get over the fact that I had heard them hundreds of times, and then I came upon the terrible beauty that is "Some Kind of Monster". No guitar solos, way-too-long intro, and yet this song was one of the best new songs I'd heard in quite a long time. I listened to the rest of the CD, and while it has none of the layering and innovation of the Black Album, it is something of beauty and power. The only song I actually consider "bad" on this album would be the song My World, but then again it is the only song on the CD with gratuitous cursing so I am a bit biased.

So, in closing, this CD is a very good CD. If you take this as what it is, a single CD by some band, it is simply amazing. However, if you compare it to the old Metallica CDs, it, to put it bluntly, sucks majorly. If you have the money to spare, I would urge you to buy it, but come to it with an open mind, do not compare it to anything else, and I doubt you will be dissapointed.

no, this cd is awful. the music on this cd really does show a mix of early metallica and the new alternitallica, and its a good mix. song sections are good, but, for example, st. anger shows no progression musically. it starts off all fast, and then it dies unexpectedly. there is no aspect of building a decent song progression. I agree, if you actually listen and stop comparing everything Metallica comes out with too albums before I think most people will love it. But, alas, everything goes back to the 80's like Metallica is the only band not allowed to progress. Times have changed, Metallica is a band made up of 4 human beings. What do you expect them to do?

I agree and disagree, mainly cos I still am fairly unsure where to stand with St Anger. I love it, yet sometimes I can't stand it.
But I definitely think it is more enjoyable if it is taken as just another CD, rather than trying to compare it to everything else Met have done.

Not a classic by them for sure but still a definite for any CD collection and another intregral part of the Met legacy.

Though I am still in mourning for the loss of Jason, Rob kicks ass, but Jason is sorely missed.... :(

"Sweet Amber" is awesome. i bought it the morning it became available in Lincoln, NE... haven't regreted buying it. the beginning of "Frantic" gets my head bangin' every time. and "Some Kind of Monster" is a tad long, but i like it. i agree that "My World" is probly the downer on this album.

but i love how they actually made this album >> just hitting "record" and playing for a couple hours. awesome. it's like looking into the garage before they go to the studio to record the good stuff, ya know? that's what i'm taking it as -- a garage session, cuz it kinda sucks that we hafta compare their later stuff with everything that came before. Load and ReLoad are good in their own right [at least to me]

mwah. i hope they play this stuff in concert this summer *crosses fingers* i've heard that they might not be playing it...

Overall, this CD is something that I just can't listen to, and couldn't even if another band put it out. The drums really do sound like trashcans, and the guitar is really blah, however since this is a band that I used to love, it just makes it even worse. I feel almost betrayed by the lack of musical prowess displayed on this CD, anyone can palm mute a guitar and play fast, but making it sound good is something different, and that is where they fail here. As far as I'm concerned the last shred of Metallica disappeared after ...And Justice For All, on that CD is the last song that has some influence of Cliff Burton in it. As soon as Cliff died, Metallica lost its spark and became a sad mochery of it's former self. Metallica used to be a metal beast, and without solos, without the good songwriting of previous CDs they aren't that beast anymore, they are just another band, that sounds like it needs to even itself out.

hmm this album is +/- in my opinion...it has some unnapealling songs and some nice ones and I might say that I only listen to three :
My World, The Unnamed Feeling and the best song in that album Sweet Amber
